The beautiful weather throughout most of the coastal areas of Spain, as well as the warm summer weather throughout the country, makes Spain an ideal camping holiday destination. Not all areas have camping sites available, so researching ahead of your vacation to find out the locations of camping sites near where you want to stay is important.
There are a great number of campsites in Spain with rated sites numbering over 1000. As can be expected, the bulk of the camping sites tend to be in the most popular tourist areas, especially in the southern Andalusian areas, as well as along the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca areas. These campsites are open year round and are rated on a scale from one to four stars. A one star campsite has the basics and not much more, whereas a four star campsite has additional features, attractions and overall is the best possible camping accommodation. In most campsites you can either park a travel trailer or caravan, or even hook up a mobile home or trailer, although space may be limited. Many people, especially families and younger travelers, typically have regular tents in the campsites. In some of the three and four star campsites you may also have the option to rent a chalet or bungalow for the evening or longer, depending on the booking schedule.
Spain offers some naturalist camping sites which are usually more remotely located than the regular campsites. Naturalists sites will allow nudity within the campsite and to enter the site guests must be a member of either the Spanish Naturalist Federation or the International Naturalist Federation. These sites are privately maintained by the organizations.
Unlike many campsites in North America the campsites in Spain will typically have staff to maintain the site. In addition they may have swimming pools, restaurants and snack areas, entertainment venues and even buses and transportation to and from the campsite. As can be expected, most campsites are very family and children friendly and tend to have playgrounds and activities for the children on site. Many campsites, especially those along the coastal areas, are within an easy walk of the beach as well as the restaurants and shops of the area.
