Practical information on Visiting Majorca
In Majorca the islanders speak Spanish and Mallorquin, which is a form of Catalan. It’s a great island to visit - easy to get around, with a wide range of bars and restaurants, as well as chic boutiques, department stores and local markets, for shopaholics. In addition to the local languages, the most common foreign languages are German and English - you will see signs in both languages.
Holiday weather - varies alot throughout the year.
The best way to learn Spanish is of course to do a short course before you arrive. If not, just get yourself a guidebook. Here are some phrases to learn meanwhile:
Hola means hello.
To bid good morning, it’s Buenas dias
Goodnight: Buenos noches
Por Favor is please.
Gracias is thank you
You’re welcome is De nada
To ask where something is, try Donde Esta? (ie where is the toilet?)
Do you speak english? Habla Ingles? (almost certainly they do)
As far as shopping hours go, Majorca follows the Siesta tradition - though not of course in the main tourist areas. Normal siesta hours are 1.30 to 5pm, so shops are closed then. Sundays, not much is open. You can drink the tap water, it’s fine by EU health standards, but if you have a sensitive stomach you may wish to try the bottles water, with or without gas. In this case always refuse ice. And watch out for restaurants with open bottles of mineral water on the table - ask to see them open them in front of you.
Banks are usually open from 9 am to 2 pm Monday to Friday, and many have cash machines outside.
Hopefully you won’t get ill during you holiday in Majorca, but if you do, the health facilities and hospitals here are extremely good and clean. For laundry, you can find numerous laundrettes and dry cleaners, as hotels can be expensive.

Spain Travel Guide - Tips For A Better Stay
Spain is a popular place to go for many people. If you are planning on backpacking round Spain and want to see as much of this wonderful country as you can then check out a few of these tips.
I guess it’s an obvious first tip, but if you plan to get off the tourist beat then you should learn Spanish. Indeed, even if you want to spend most of your time in the big cities, speaking Spanish will improve your stay.
Plenty of people in the cities and on the Costas will speak English but you shouldn’t rely on this fact. If you want to see interesting parts of Spain that not many people visit then you need to get some basic Spanish phrases under your belt. Even simple phrases will help you get by on a day to day basis. You will relate to people if you have a conversational level of Spanish too and this will make your time more enjoyable because you will be able to interactive with people.
Whilst it might be fun to have spontaneous travel plans they will also add up in money terms. If you can prebook much of your travel you will save plenty. Indeed, you can save almost 50% if you have some plans about where you will be throughout your trip in Spain. More money saved on travels leaves more money to spend on day trips or doing things that you want to do.
Don’t let the weather ruin your stay in Spain. Spain is one of the better parts of Europe for weather. Indeed, parts of southern Spain get more days of sunshine per year than most parts of the world. Try to begin your travels in the spring or early summer. The north is more likely to be cooler and have inclement weather so try starting in the north and work your way down to the south. This should limit the extent that the weather plays in your travels. Although a bit of rain never harmed anyone anyhow.
Madrid and Barcelona are the two major cities that you want to spend some time in. There is plenty to see and do in these two cities. You can spend weeks in each but if you are on a time line a few days may suffice. If you only have a few days get organized and see the things you really want to do.
There are plenty of other things to see in other parts of Spain. A great way to get round Spain is to take the fast train. You can be in Sevilla in a few hours after leaving Madrid. It is a fast way to get around the country and you can also take in the scenery at the same time. This is often missed if you fly everywhere and there is some beautiful and changing landscapes as you go form central to southern Spain. Or to the North for that matter.
Spain is a great place to visit and you will have a wonderful time if you make some simple plans before hand.

As the Western gatekeeper of the Mediterranean, Spain has long been known for its beautiful beaches and resorts. It is the first of the European countries to border the Mediterranean when journeying east, so it is a natural destination for people from the United States and all over the Americas. Also, travelers find a lot of appeal in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean that border Spain above and below Portugal and its west coast. Northern Spain has many surfing opportunities that a lot of people are aware of.

Spain is known as one of the world’s most productive agricultural countries, and tourists love to take a trip to the many vineyards and olive groves cultivated throughout the countryside. The groves of Jaen and the vineyards of Majorca are particularly popular.

Carnival is one of the most famous celebrations, celebrated throughout the country but with the biggest parties in Cadiz and Santa Cruz. Also widely known for its flamenco dancers and its bullfighting is the April Fair in Seville and all over Spain, the running of the bulls is practiced each year.
History of Spain
Today, there are many components of Spanish culture and it is therefore evident that Spain is the home of a rich and varied cultural history. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t until the years just prior to Christopher Columbus sailing to the New World that the forces of Allah were permanently ousted from the country and Spain was actually one of the northern most points of the ancient Islamic empire. In the Moros y Cristianos festivities in southern Spain in the springtime, this mixed heritage is still celebrated. As mentioned, the country is credited with funding the person who eventually was given credit for discovering the New World, and there are museums and monuments throughout the country commemorating that historical voyage.
