Relax In Barcelona

Filed under: Travel and Leisure - 28 Aug 2010 from guest

Talk to anyone about Barcelona’s parks and gardens, and you may usually hear the wonders about the UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s Park Gell in the north of the city, or perhaps La Cuitadella, Barcelona’s garden which also houses the city zoo. Or perhaps they’ll tell you about Montjic Mountain with its enormous 2k hectares to explore. Granted, these are all superb places to visit and definitely should be on anyone’s agenda if visiting the city for the first time, but what about steering clear of the crowds?

Luckily , there are some great tiny hideaways that many travellers will not find, and are only popular with the neighbors whenever they have the likelihood, which is usually always the weekend. This suggests that if you are visiting Barcelona mid-week, you can regularly have your own tiny personal oasis in the city, all to oneself. Take Montjic, for instance. As mentioned, many travellers make the trip over to the “Jewish Mount” but generally to take the wire automobile ride up to the old castle and admire the view. Why not escape to the botanical gardens, which are nearly always quiet and an excellent place for a picnic. Or head into the undergrowth towards El font del Gat park - the moggies fountain, so called as the fountain was believed to be discovered by a cat! These two small gems are a way to shun the crush, and relax in what seems to be another city altogether.

Staying in the city, there are numerous smaller parks and plaas which give respite on a busy working day, such as Truro Park in northerly Barcelona, near to the finance district of the city and a welcome lunch spot for those working here. Slightly out of the way, but well worth the trip is the superb Horta Labyrinth. Set in a cypress garden and designed in 1791, the dramatic gardens are really worth the small entrance charge ( a couple of Eurodollars ), and are a total escape from the busy city. The north-eastern community of Horta ( literally in Catalan meaning market garden ) also homes Barcelona’s third oldest park, Parc del Guinardo, another huge space well used by neighbors to chill and get to grips with nature. Find cheap Ferienwohnungen Barcelona close to the Parc del Guinardo.

even farther north, but certainly a place to hob-nob only with the neighbors is the Park of Crue de Coll, complete with a swimming lake - an excellent place to sidestep the crowds of Barceloneta’s busy beaches in the summer, for instance. And what about if you are unable to make it to the beach, or hate the sand? Well, the largest area in Barcelona is a grid-like extension made from square blocks, and known as Eixample. And in the busy streets of Eixample is what the neighbors call the “Eixample beach” - open from June to Sep. Each city block is a square with an empty middle terrace - some of which are converted into factories, car parks, etc . Find cheap and good Barcelona Appartments in this area. Well, in north eastern Eixample lies the Old Water Factory, which was a treatment plant for the city’s water board. The space is a cool place for young families, with a shallow pool, lots of sand to play in, and also facilities to change, toilets, etc . And plenty of shade from the palms, too.
