Spain is not only a large country, but a very diverse one. Its regions reflect that diversity very well, in many different aspects: from scenery to gastronomy, from traditions to climate and from culture to industry. Perhaps one of the most exciting features of a trip to Spain is the opportunity to experience for yourself the vast differences between the different regions of the country.

One of the first things most visitors notice about the differences between Spain’s regions is the landscape – after all this is the first thing they see. It varies from the desert landscape of parts of Almeria to the lush green of the north and northwest, in the Basque Country, Asturias and Galicia. But there are many other differences that, all together, have acted to forge the destiny of the different regions and to produce the Kingdom of Spain as it is formed today.

Spain Today

Spain is now made up of 17 different “autonomous regions”, plus 2 enclaves in Northern Africa. However, not all of the regions enjoy the same degree of autonomy, and this has caused considerable friction over the past few years. The region that was first to claim a high measure of autonomy was Catalonia, followed very closely by the Basque Country, and by Galicia. In fact, these three regions of Spain are known as the “historic communities”, since they are perceived to have the greatest – and longest – sense of historic independence from the central government.

Each region has its own parliament, prime minister, government, administration and courts. However, as noted above, the responsibilities and competences of these organs of government differ greatly from one region to another – some have responsibility for education in their region, other do not; some have responsibility for health care, others do not; etc.

However, most tourists will be much more interested in the differences they can actually experience: the landscape, the culture, the traditions, the cooking, the culture… And perhaps one of the features that shows a region’s distinctiveness most is its fiestas. Everyone knows the “San Fermines” of Pamplona, where the “mozos” run before the bulls and which was made famous by Hemingway. But wherever you go in Spain, if you happen to coincide with the village, town or city fiesta, you’ll probably be treated to a very special traditional event.

Another most enjoyable difference between the regions of Spain is the difference in the local foods and drinks. The dishes and wines of the north of Spain really have nothing to do with those of Andalusia. But the same is true between the east and west, between the interior and coast, between the country and cities…
