Costa Brava

Costa Brava literally means “rugged coast” and a more apt description of this beautiful area of Catalonia could not be found. Although the area is a tourist spot, it is not typical of the resort type beaches found in other parts of Spain and the Mediterranean. The towns of the area were originally dependent on fishing as their major source of employment and financial stability, but increasing numbers of tourists from the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe quickly turned the area in to a resort destination.

Fully modern and newly constructed hotels are found right along the beach, providing spectacular views of the ocean from the patio or the balcony of the rooms. In addition the wonderful landscape is perfect for those that like exploring, hiking, or simply relaxing on the beach and watching the fishing boats go by. Swimming, diving and sports fishing are all popular activities with tourists and the warm weather year round makes it a perfect holiday destination.

One of the largest attractions to the region is the thermal spas located around the Costa Brava. These hot mineral baths were first discovered by the Romans but are now full service spas used by visitors from around the world. In addition, the resorts and hotels of the Costa Brava offer day trips to local thermal spas as well as other health and wellness type activities in the area. Nature parks and reserves make it possible to take a quick hike or day trip to a wild natural area, perfect for seeing the beauty of the coastal areas perfectly preserved. The small coves and little isolated beaches formed by the natural coastline make perfect private places to spend the day drawing, relaxing, swimming or reading. A true family vacation area, the Costa Brava offers lots of outdoor adventure options for the whole family.

For those that prefer more indoor types of events there are lots of cultural and art attractions to see and do on the Costa Brava. Guided tours through museums, historical and cultural heritage sites, and even to local festivals, are all popular as day trips. There are a wide variety of music festivals and concerts performed throughout the Costa Brava, especially in the summer months of July through September. Shopping and eating out in the many world class restaurants featuring local and international cuisine is also a major attraction of the Costa Brava area.
