Car rental in Spain is a great way to get around and see the country. Public transport is much better than a few years ago, but there are still a few towns and villages, and whole rural areas, which are well worth a visit, but very difficult to access by bus or train.

Most cars that you can rent in Spain are almost brand new, and are well maintained by the car rental company. The only thing that may be a little off-putting, especially for North American visitors, is that it’s not very easy to find automatic cars. And, when you do find them, they tend to be much more expensive to rent than manual-change cars.

Important Information

Driving in Spain is basically the same as driving in the rest of Europe and North America. Wearing seat belts is compulsory, and using a mobile phone while driving is banned – you must use a hands-free kit.

In theory, if you’re from outside the European Union, you should have an international driver’s license, but in practice your national license will be accepted with no problems. In your car you must carry a safety kit, including two warning triangles and visibility vests for anyone who has to get out of the car in the event of a breakdown. Obviously, your car rental company will make sure your car is equipped with all these things.

Speed limits are strictly enforced, at 120 km/h on motorways, 90-100 km/h on the open road, and 50 km/h in towns.

Useful Tips

As in other countries, you’ll find that it’s usually more expensive to hire a car at an airport than from a city-center location, and it’s also more expensive to drop the car off at a different location from where you picked it up, often considerably so.

Since distances in Spain can be deceptively long, it’s always better to make sure that the car you rent comes with unlimited mileage. Gas (petrol stations) are easy to find almost everywhere, and sell unleaded gas and diesel.

One last tip for British drivers: be especially careful when starting off after a stop at a service station or restaurant. It’s very easy to drift off on to the left of the road.

We recommend the car rental company Easycar. Easycar is a sister company to Easyjet and offers car hire in many different countries. And, just like Easyjet, you can be sure you’re getting a cheap, but reliable, service.
