In Spain, sports are a true passion and there are a variety of sports to do or to watch. This country has the mild climate and the landscape that encourages people of all ages to play sports. The mountains have the snow and the beaches are world quality for water type events.  There are indoor and outdoor sports held throughout the country for people of all ages.

One of the national sports is soccer and it is called football in Spain. The soccer season is taken very seriously in this country and their National league is known all over the world. Fans are fiercely loyal to their soccer team and travel outside of the country to international soccer events to show their support. Some of the other sports are basketball, golfing, skiing, water sports, cycling and bullfighting.

Golf is gaining in popularity every season mainly because of the mild climate and the growing number of golf courses. However, Spain is known for the bullfights. Bullfighting is the number one sport in many regions of Spain. It is also the most controversial and superstitious sport.  The colour yellow is thought to bring bad luck to the toreros, so the performers and spectators do not wear that colour when at a bullfighting event. The bullfighting season runs from March to October and is often the main event in the fiestas. Spectators come from many parts of the world to see a local bullfight.

The winter skiing season in Spain is from November to April and the local mountains have the best terrain for skiing. These runs are within an easy driving distance and often have fresh powder every day, many which are equipped with snow making machines. The Mediterranean waters and coastal beaches provide fantastic areas for nautical sports such as scuba diving and windsurfing. The rivers provide excellent trout fishing. In addition there are many rivers and lakes throughout Spain that are used for kayaking and canoeing. The best windsurfing area is in the southern part of Spain and the world championships for this sport are held in this southern region.

Other regional sports throughout Spain are biking, hiking, as well as sports car racing. For those that enjoy hunting, Spain offers small game hunting for rabbits and large game hunting for deer and boars. The hunting season is between October and February of each year.  Also, there are bird shoots for partridges, woodpigeons and turtledoves.
