Spain has many well known and famous individuals in the arts, sports, TV and film worlds, as well as various other fields of study. Many historically significant artists have either come from Spain or have studied with the Masters within the country. A brief list of the most famous people from Spain and their accomplishments include:

  • Antonio Banderas – born in Andalucia in 1960, Antonio Banderas quickly became a household name through his Oscar winning acting in a variety of films. He is perhaps best known in America for his roles in movies such as the Zorro movies, Spy Kids, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, The 13th Warrior and Desperado. He has recently been heard as the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek movies.
  • Penelope Cruz – born in 1974 this actress and model and television star is from Madrid and is famous the world over. She has started in such movies as Gothika, Sahara, Woman on Top and Volver. In addition she has won awards for her performances both in English and Spanish speaking productions.
  • Antoni Gaudi – 1852-1926 is considered one of the premier architects of the Art Nouveau movement in Barcelona and other parts of Spain. His buildings are known for their unique details as well as the colors and innovative use of shapes and structures in a completely original way.
  • Hernán Cortés – 1485-1547 was one of the first major Spanish explorers. He was one of the major contributors to the colonization of the New World in South America.
  • Salvador Dali – one of the most eccentric of the Spanish painters, Salvador Dali was born 1904 in Catalonia, Spain and lived until 1989. He was known for his surreal type paintings and artwork.
  • Pablo Picasso – 1881-1937, born in Malaga Spain and then moved to Barcelona where he studied the arts. Pablo Picasso was best known for his theme paintings including the blue period where he painted a large collection of paintings all in the colors of blue.
  • Enrique Inglesias – known as one of the top Latin music recording artists across the world, Enrique was born in Madrid, Spain in 1975. He has earned an international reputation based on his own talents, not relying on his father Julio Inglesias.
  • Plácido Domingo- born in Madrid in 1941, Plácido Domingo is considered to be one of best tenors in modern history. He has performed in over 129 roles in opera performances around the world.
  • Sergio Garcia – born in Castellon, Spain in 1980, this professional golfer is in the top ten in the Official World Rankings of golf. Sergio plays in the American PGA tour as well as the European Tour.
