Barcelona welcomes AC/DC

Filed under: Travel and Leisure - 19 Apr 2009 from guest

Australian rockers AC/DC will next Tuesday be gracing the halls of the Palau Sant Jordi. Located high in the hills of Montjuic beside the Olympic Stadium, this modern attractive venue has played host to numerous high profile bands and artists including Coldplay, U2 and Queen. On 31st March it will once again welcome another legend of the rock world which you can see from your accommodation Barcelona.

The band is currently on a world tour called Black Ice, after the new album they are promoting, it is the sixteenth album in the bands history. The band has been together the best part of four decades having first formed in 1973. Having been set up by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, it is now composed of five members with its line up having changed several times throughout the years.

The band is well known for its relentlessly long tours and party hard attitude. Their style is commonly referred to as hard rock and they are considered to be one of the pioneers of heavy metal. Although the band has always classified their music as simply ‘rock and roll’. They remain one of the fifth highest selling bands in US music history and their most famed album, ‘Back in Black’, sold more than 22 millions copies, making it the fifth highest selling album ever in the US.

In recent years, the band has also been on the receiving end of numerous awards and honours which go hand in hand with legendary success they have had. In 2000 they were inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame with their hands imprinted into the cement. In 2003 they received one of the greatest honours, their induction into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame. During this ceremony they gave a classic performance in which Aerosmith front man, Steve Tyler, performed alongside them.

The last decade has seen the ageing rock gods still showing their vitality and with no sign of letting up, who knows when they will finally hang up their guitars?

This is one must see event for any Rock and Roll fan and you can do so next week from your hotels in barcelona.

Dancing in La Fira in Barcelona

Filed under: Travel and Leisure - 18 Apr 2009 from guest

Last Friday I found a really nice place to go for a dance in Barcelona. “La Fira” is a huge bar, which is characterized as a “barmuseum” by the owner. This expression is more than fitting. The club is based on a fairground namely in a way that you can only imagine if you would have seen it with your own eyes: Fair swings, bumper car wagons or shooting ranges. Everything is very colourful and there is also a selection of animal masks for decoration.
If you stand in front of the access you would think that this bar could only hold about 50 people.
Well, that was at least the impression we had standing in front of it at 1 am on Friday. However, you will be surprised as soon as you enter “La Fira”. The area is incredibly extensive despite it looking small from the street.
You feel like you are in one big fairground. The attention to detail is impressive. There are figures, you might know from ghost trains, are allotted through the whole location and you can also find lots of collectibles shown in cabinets on the side of the club.
The 2 bars look like as if someone had taken them straight from a fair in order to place them here again in Carrer de Proven?a 171.
The music, however, luckily was not like what you would expect in a fair. In “La Fira” the music is not limited to one type during the whole night. Far from it! I have never been to any other disco in Barcelona, which offers such a broad range of music.
I personally really loved the assortment and I don’t think I was the only one…
Unfortunately the drinks are comparatively expensive: Long drinks 8€, beer 5€ and a shot 3€ but therefore the entrance, compared with the huge discos, is pretty cheap.
Unlike Razzmatazz, Apolo, Opium and all the other gigantic clubs in Barcelona, “La Fira” includes only one floor, which also means that you don’t lose your friends so easily.
A little highlight of the night was the barkeepers who performed and danced to 2-3 songs up on the bar…
Well, whoever prefers going out to smaller clubs and has already booked a Hotel Barcelona should definitely visit “La Fira”. It provides you with such a unique and special experience.
The opening hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 10 pm to 3 am, Friday and Saturday from 7 pm to 4:30 am and Sunday from 6 pm to 1 am.
Let’s go dancing on the fair!
