from Your Spain GuideLocated very close to the geographical center of the country of Spain, the city of Toledo is a historical treasure to visit. The many different cultures that have lived in and inhibited the city at various times in history have all left their unique mark through architecture, cultural impact as well as art and music in the area. Christian, Moorish and Jewish cultures have all existed within the city and the evidence of their influence is noted in the buildings, artwork and even the decoration and traditions within the historical center of Toledo.
Historically, Toledo was famous for the outstanding swords and knives it produced that were both of the highest quality as well as beautifully made. That tradition still continues with steelwork in knives as one of the major traditional industries. Toledo also has fully modern types of industry as well, although the historical areas tend to remain almost as if time has stood still. For the rich cultural and historical heritage evident through this diverse city, Toledo has been declared a World Heritage site.
There are many different museums in Toledo featuring artwork as well as artifacts. The famous artist El Greco is honored at the Casa-Museo El Greco, while more modern artists are featured at the famous Toledo Museum of Contemporary Art, which is located in the Jewish Quarter of the city. Located in the old Santa Cruz hospital, the Museo de Santa Cruz provides visitors with three different types of displays including art, archeology and traditional arts and handicrafts from the area. The museums are surrounded by large numbers of monuments, historical buildings as well as shops and boutiques that will provide something to do and see for everyone.
For those interested in the cuisine of the area, Toledo will provide a feast of local dishes all cooked in the traditional rustic style of the countryside. Pheasant, quail and venison are all cooked in the rich La Mancha style that is both tasty and filling. However international cuisine is also readily available at the many upscale hotels and restaurants located in Toledo. Locally produced wines are available with the meals as are a good assortment of local cheeses and the famous ground almond and sugar confectionary known as Marzipan.
South of the city of Toledo is the large CabaƱeros National Park which provides hikers and trekkers a wonderful opportunity to see the natural wildlife of the area as well as see some truly outstanding and picturesque scenery.
