Majorca is a picturesque island found in the Balearic chain in the western Mediterranean Sea. Lanzarote is a Spanish island that lies at the eastern end of the Canary Island chain in the Atlantic Ocean. Created nearly 35 million years ago from volcanic eruptions, Lanzarote is the fourth largest island in the chain. Only two industries exist on this Spanish isle; agriculture and tourism, the latter being the main economic factor for over 40 years. Lanzarote’s scenery is responsible for much of its appeal. Cueva de los Verdes, a remnant of the island’s volcanic creation, is one such sight. 3,000 years ago, an eruption sent flows of lava over the land, and the molten rock eventually hardened. Lower layers of the new formation collapsed, leaving behind a tube that acted as a sort of cave. The colorful igneous rock walls of Cueva de los Verdes are even more beautiful when reflected in the pools of seawater that have crept into the conduit. Most interesting, however, is the 500-seat concert hall that rests at the mouth of this unique landform.

Arrecife is Lanzarote’s capital city and one of the major attractions on the island. Meaning “reef” in Spanish, Arrecife derives its name from the rocky barrier that sits out from the sparkling beach at the edge of town. The reef is an interesting backdrop to the sunbathing and swimming activities that tourists enjoy while visiting. A trip to the harbor brings guests to the Gran Hotel Arrecife, the highest structure in all of the Canary Islands. Local churches constructed from the region’s historic and cultural architecture are a lovely sight, and a journey to the Castle of San Gabriel provides an even greater sense of antiquity. The wondrous and slightly imposing shipwreck off of Arrecife’s coast inspires awe in those who gaze upon its hull.

Timanfaya National Park is located in the southwestern section of Lanzarote. The park’s active volcano, appropriately name Timanfaya, provided the beautiful park with its name, and the steam geyser that climbs high into the air as a result of the hot ground entertains guests who venture to the park. Dazzling mountain vistas are worthy of more than a few good photographs as are the local plants and animals. Photographs will likely be the extent of your interaction with them, however, because Timanfaya National Park has been designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Visitors are closely regulated, which can add a privileged air to a trip to the park.
